| From the Where2sing.com forum: Hi Tom, Some worthwhile reading http://mixonline.com/mag/audio_why_louder_sounds/
Besides hearing ......there have also been other health issues identified with loud music....particularly heavy bass.....at the moment I just cannot remember where I read the article....but it was particularly referring to the heavy bass that many young people have in their vehicles these days....suggesting it as being the trigger for many other ailments as well. (the details elude me right now)
As operators I feel we are between a rock and a hard place.. whilst on the one hand we want to be responsible....save the planets hearing capabilities... and on the other .....we seek our shows to have impact on our audiences......the fact remains that 91db measured at say 2-3 meteres from the source...... in a noisy room of 100+ people .....just does NOT cut it!
It should also be noted .....that whilst I do NOT wish to imply that I am an expert in sound engineering..the fact remains that many hosts that I see ...just cannot mix their sounds correctly.....even with top end equipment......with an understanding and prudent use of equalisation.... a correctly set system gain structure.....any system can be percieved as being loud ....when in fact .......if measured is quite moderate in terms of SPL.
I have been accused of being TOO loud many times (Particularly by my wife LOL ) and obviously as hosts our sound quality is not always perfect .......I have currently just upgraded my system and have an extra 1000 watts to play with ....now this does not necessarily mean we will be any louder ...but hopefully 'cleaner' at the same volumes and by limiting certain frequencies (particularly in the mid high range) .I am hoping to achieve a better and cleaner perception of 'loud' without in reality going any louder.
However as you say ...hearing damage is a very real issue and not to be overlooked.....I am uncertain as to where the balance lies?
