| From the Where2sing.com forum: JUDGING COMPETITIONS.............. Not an enviable task.
Well it is Semi Finals Time in the Karaoke Idol challenge and there has already been a little controversy over some unsuccessful contestants. “ Singer X should have made it through” This, in my opinion is always the hardest part of running any competition. I tried something a little different at one of the semis and I am interested in some feedback.
I asked one of my semi finalists who was on of the unsuccessful contestants and was eliminated, to come along to another venue which she had never been to and be one of my 3 judges on the night. Without going into a lot of detail, there were 5 excellent female singers on this night of which 2 had to be eliminated. After the competition had ended I had a chat with “Judge Jen” and she was saying how hard it was to decide not just who went through but more so who to eliminate. “Judge Jen” finished by saying she now had a better appreciation of how difficult it was to eliminate 2 singers who did a fantastic job on the night yet do not make it through to the next step.
My POINT. It is easy for punters and even other singers to say “Singer X should have made it through” but more so you have to eliminate “singer Y” This could be you!!
My QUESTION. Do you feel, on some occasions not all, it is a good idea to involve unsuccessful contestants in the judging side of a competition to experience “first hand” how difficult it can be to eliminate a contestant, that was yourself the night before and maybe understand a little better the tough job that our judges have ahead of them in competitions.
P.S. Many thanks to “Judge Jen” who, by the way said she would Judge again if asked.
