From the Where2sing.com forum:

I feel like an arsonist coming back to help hose down the fire - but here goes:

Even in 'bad' reviews, not all is bad. Karaoke is good - just sometimes not as good as it could (should) be. But it's still karaoke, and still more or less enjoyable. It's also, as 'a host' astutely notes, very different for someone to cruise in for a couple of hours and review a gig than to write a report based on several visits. And, more importantly, what I criticise in a gig may be something that someone else likes or doesn't even notice - or visa versa.

But we've got away from this topic, and we seem to be debating someone's manner and right to criticise; if this person is not the venue manager, or the management, not the host himself, nor the host's girlfriend - then the next person one might consider is the obvious 'next in line' who might also be evident by their absence in their real identity. It's a bit like looking for a black hole, in that you know where it exists by looking at everything else around it and seeing what's missing. And, of course, people unmask themselves by their unique writing style, including things like putting a space before their exclamation marks. Oh, and not to miss clues embedded in the posts written during the normal business day such as '... we are actually working !' . However, forum identities are not revealed on this site, and I'll have to leave it as cryptic as that.

I do, as PeterM suggests, try and give a factual but entertaining view of a night's karaoke - if I have bias, then it will be the same bias across all the venues that I review, and that should allow readers to assess other reviews by comparing them with the review of a venue that they've attended. It's probably true that, after visiting so many karaokes and writing so many reviews, I'm quicker to judge and damn than a couple of years ago - but the reports of hosts and singers discussing the details of criticisms openly suggests that they are making up their own minds about what is fair, unfair, and what needs to be improved.

And that's got to be good for all of us.
