MUSIC ADDICT : We are NOT talking about paying commercial artists to perform at a venue.

On the contrary, MALAYA is doing the performers a favour! MALAYA is providing a venue for no-name people like you and I (or other semi-professionals, and mostly bathroom singers and the like) and a reasonably sized audience for them to perform to, and to self-promote.

And for that priviledge of being on centre stage for their each allocated 25 mins, to reciprocate MALAYA's good gesture, they bring in 7 supporters each paying $35pp ... and that's for a 5-course meal from an award-winning restaurant (seafood spinach bisque, beef rendang, apple chicken, nasi goreng, dessert / tea or coffee) ... the entertainment is an add-on, a by-and-by, something extra ... the meal itself is worth more than $35pp if based on Fri and Sat prices.

You got it wrong. The incentive is NOT the free meal to the performer (if I was Sammo, I will be charging him / her for the meal too!). The incentives for the performer are : a venue to showcase his / her talents or the lack of it, for 25 mins, to 7 of his most ardent supporters, and to at least 40 others in the audience who would not have otherwise seen his / her performances let alone pay to see it, a chance for him / her to network, a chance to self-promote (handing out or selling their CDs, other PR material), and maybe if the gig takes off, industry people may drop in from time to time and scout for new talent ... BUT if nothing comes out of it (and I anticipate that this will be the case for 90% of the performers), so be it, then it will be just another good night out and big adrenalin rush for the performer and 7 of his / her friends and family.

The venue seats 120 comfortably (140 if pushed, like during the Xmas season). It is an informal comnfortable cafe-restaurant with award-winning cuisine. The intention is to foster a small crowd, no more than 60-80 for such Open Mic Nites, so performers and audience can interact. Average Fri and Sat busy karaoke nights are 90-100 seated patrons, comprising mainly of group bookings of 10-40 people each booking (of predominantly, 90%, karaoke virgins! making them fantastic grass-root karaoke fun nights!).
