| From the Where2sing.com forum: Hi China, and all others, What a great topic. I can remember this discussion raging along on the forum of the old Victorian Karaoke website.
My experience as a host tells me a couple of things, (most already mentioned below): (1) You need to have a rotation policy, ie close the first round after 'x' number of singers, and then put new singers in at a ratio, (depending on the expected turnup of the particular venue - 2 old/1 new, etc.). (2) You do need to be flexible within the rotation to mix up 'poor' singers, song 'styles', etc. (3) You also need to understand the particular venue well enough to know how to 'work' your rotations. (4) And lastly, you need to be flexible enough to throw out your own rules if a genuine situation occurs.
We run four different venues, and the rotations at each of these venues is handled similarly but they each end up quite differently. Probably the only rule we stick pretty rigidly to, is not providing a singing slot for the real late-comers who have been elsewhere and decide to come at the last minute, (to show everyone how wonderful a singer they are). We don't offer a straight No, and we try to explain to them to come earlier next time.
Also remember, 'you can't please ALL of the people All of the time' - just be fair, honest and do your best.
