A TALKING POINT

We hear of, in sports and other contests and competitions, phrases like:
“ … here’s the defending Champion …”
“…. and still, the Heavyweight Champion of the World ….”

We read of Makybe Diva’s 3 magical consecutive Melbourne Cups, or the immortal Kingston Town’s unrivalled 3 Cox Plates, or Manikato’s unbelievable 5 consecutive (yes, FIVE) William Reid Stakes and 5 (yes, FIVE) Futurity Stakes 3 of which are also consecutive wins (for the benefit of some - these are race horses being mentioned here!).

We marvel at Tiger Wood’s multiple wins in various golf tournaments around the world, and who can forget Bjorn Borg’s 5 Wimbledon Singles Titles and 6 French Open Singles Titles.

We pride ourselves over Australia’s 16 consecutive Test wins.

Even the Olympic movement changed with the times to eventually embrace the realities of modern life and discarded with its amateur status prerequisite for competing athletes.

Why then, do we still limit Karaoke Comps to rank amateurs only?

Why not open up the competitions? Why shouldn’t a pro or semi-pro compete? Why couldn’t past winners compete again, and again, and again, each time putting his or her reputation on the line?

Wouldn’t this then raise the standard of Karaoke in general, and make it a real alternative form of entertainment, because we may never know who’s gonna rock up at a karaoke venue near you?

The presence of a seemingly invincible “champion” in any other event has never stopped other people from entering and trying to knock him or her off … why should it be different with so-called talent quests?

It’s indeed a mystery to me!
