Kev, you've answered from an operational viewpoint. But we'd probably be interested from an economic viewpoint -ie- the return on investment for regular updates. Of course, anyone prefers a regularly updated list as invariably new discs contain random choices from all eras and genres, so we all benefit. But how much should the youth cult drive the purchase decision? If you get many takers for your choices then hooray for your good taste & reading of your crowd. Of course, song lists are inventory and they depreciate just like tech gear. But there is more than just the cost of discs. There is the endless updating of lists as well. Those venues that don't update can be a challenge & fun - sort of like Andrew Denton's how many ways can you do Stairway to Heaven. Good singers can always find ways to liven up dead song lists. I hate to see karaoke habits that jeopardize the trade by making too much burden on hosts & venues. Excessive list updating sounds like a costly risk. I have my doubts that there is a systematic way of updating as there are too many new releases these days and they are all over the place. For example, girl groups and Irish groups are popular on radio but I wonder how many times the karaoke versions would get played - not much at my local. I haven't heard a rap song since I did one last & that must have been over a year ago. Swing stuff is all of a sudden popular again & would have been a dead duck purchase a few years ago ... I think guessing any market is very hard. Good luck.
