From the Where2sing.com forum:

Hi Tricia...
I'm with T.D.K. on this one. I'm a singer / songwriter myself but it in no way does it provide my income as I haven't released my music as yet save for on my free to view / listen website. Looking to complete a few more songs, get them online, then tap my industry contacts to check it out and help me out directly or put me in touch with those who can help me go pro. I don't do gigs. My income comes from non-music related areas, so I am still an amateur for the moment.
Comp winnings shouldn't constitute 'professional' in my opinion. Comps are one off events and unrelated to each other really unless it's the same karaoke company running the gigs the singer is winning at.
I find it in poor taste that a singer will go to several comps with the same comp repertoire and leave with the winnings but even so, it is still just 'chance.' There's no guarantee they'll win so it can't really be thought of as professional. Different judges, different crowds, usually a different karaoke company too. So, even if their songs are the same, I can't really begrudge them anything besides their lack of versatility or risk taking. Not a fan of the 'if you're on a good thing, stick to it' mentality. Singing should be an art and art requires creativity, not stagnation.
KJ's should probably be excluded also unless they don't sing at their own shows. The likelihood of that is slim though I imagine.
T.D.K. seems to have the winning formula from my perspective. Of course, it will rely on the trust system. You only have their word for it and likewise if someone sees potential competition in someone else, there's nothing stopping them making stuff up about that other person being a pro that they have seen somewhere else. Start asking for people's tax returns or bank statements though and things could get nasty.
Most folk are going to be honest about it, judging from my own observations over the years.
