| From the Where2sing.com forum: Apologies David, I was unaware that the running of hotels and such could also be added to your portfolio - as a matter of interest just how many pies do you have your fingers in? In my experience (and I do have some) the hospitality industry is in a league of its own and is like no other for one very basic reason, the fact that when you mix the general public with alcohol it makes it a very delicate and tenuous business to be in. You need to be all kinds of things to all kinds of people and frankly judging by your attitude here I cant see that you'd carry it off with alot of success. Thats not to say that I would either. When you deal with the public face to face in any business you cannot afford to be so unyielding and pragmatic, it just doesnt work.
In saying that you have now got me completely confused. Why do you assume that..........'most of those voting would not know how to find their favourite host in a list'. Why is that any different to finding their favourite venue? In fact having spoken to some of my singers about this a good percentage of them refuse to vote because they want to vote for the host, not the venue, as the host is the only reason they go to that venue. And what thanks do we get from the management of that venue for this? As Rovics commented some time back.......in alot of cases total indifference and very little support whatsoever. But if youre not bringing people to the venue youre booted quick smart. Sometimes it makes it very hard to be enthusiastic about promoting that venue, but we have to in order to keep our own heads above water. I think operators deserve alot more credit than we actually get for what we do and the hours put in behind the scenes that we dont get paid for, all to ultimately keep management happy. We spend a good majority of the money we earn to stay on top of the game and for what? To have the venues' name up in lights with hardly any acknowledgement for our own hard work.
That is why David, self promotion seems so important to us. If we dont do it who will? As everyone knows I have been no fan of Fundadownunda Karaoke and their tactics. But thinking rationally I dont see anything wrong with the email they sent to their singers to encourage them to vote. They have *3* employees who's accounts you cancelled some time ago so their votes havent counted for a while, but they are not allowed to vote even from a computer outside Trish's home. Kev and Trish as far as I know are not siamese twins but are not permitted to vote as individuals but are only allowed one vote between them, as is the case with my partner and I. If your family members and friends attend your show are they not entitled to vote too? My sister sings in NZ, and obviously came to our show when she was here on holiday. She had been to other shows here before I started hosting, and when she got home she voted for my show, on her own computer - what sort of sister would she be if she didnt vote for me, whether she genuinely liked my show or not? But is her vote invalid because she is my sister??? Are all my singing friends votes invalid because they happen to be my friends and like me? If so, you better cancel all my venues votes because they are 'confrontational'. Perhaps then my venue will drop off the list like I asked for it to be some time ago.
I guess what Im really asking is do you want us hosts promoting your website or not? It doesnt seem to matter to you what tactics you use when it comes to promoting yourself, so why are you jumping on a high horse all of a sudden because someone other than Chatty gets to number one? No offense to Chatty, I applaud their standing as I should. But do you know for sure what they do behind the scenes to get their votes? Same as everyone else I imagine. You do what you have to do to get yourself out there. It was the likes of you and Fundadownunda that very quickly taught me that, now you seem to have changed your mind. In one breath you tell me I would do well to adopt the successful business practices of Fundadownunda karaoke, now you chastise them for it. All you have managed to do is convince me of how truely capricious you really are.
I know Im gonna cop alot of flak for this, but sticks and stones. Think I'll have a cuppa tea and a lie down and watch Life of Brian now, spend the rest of the day LMAO!
